New York Grill

Although famous for its heavenly steaks, New York Grill’s seafood is equally unmatched. With a menu boasting mouth-watering appetisers like crispy fried calamari, tuna tataki and crab and clam fritters, it is the freshly shucked oysters that are the true stars of the show. With that being said, New York Grill will be serving up $2 oysters from 3pm – 6pm daily, so make sure you pay them a visit.

White + Wong’s

There’s a reason White + Wong’s was voted Restaurant of the Year at the 2021 Newmarket Business Awards, and that ultimately comes down to the glorious dishes on offer. If you’re a fan of Asian-fusion, this place is second to none, and to make them even better, they also have oysters. If you order freshly shucked, you’ll receive oysters served with a divine chilli jam, topped with fresh lime and crispy shallots. Opt for the tempura and these battered beauties will arrive with nahm jim dipping sauce and a delicious citrus kaffir lime mayonnaise.

White + Wong’s is currently serving oysters at $30 for half a dozen, or $60 for a dozen.

Khao San Eatery and Bar

Tucked away on Davis Crescent, Khao San Eatery is a favourite for many due to its fun, vibrant atmosphere. Serving Thai food with a modern twist, the menu combines South East Asian flavours, with fresh New Zealand produce like Wagyu beef, South Island salmon and local lamb shanks. When it comes to seafood, the options are a plenty, but it’s the oysters covered in a delicious Thai dressing that have been the rave of the town.

If you prefer to enjoy your oysters at home, Seafood Harbour has plenty for you to pick up. To let you in on a local secret, this seafood supplier offers an abundance of fresh seafood that is a firm favourite amongst Newmarket locals. Whether served fresh out of the pottle with a homemade mignonette sauce or battered with a panko crumb, it’s hard to stop at just one.

Five things you probably didn’t know about oysters. We’re not bluffin!

  • Oysters have been around for approximately 15 millions years
  • They are an aphrodisiac, so be careful you don’t have too many
  • Oysters can change their sex. In fact, they will often do this several times
  •  Oysters have gills and breathe just like fish do
  • A single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day. That’s about as much water as you would use in a 10-minute shower.
