All Eyes on Newmarket

It has been well covered by media over the past few years about some of the crime challenges being faced by town centres across New Zealand. Ram raids, smash and grabs and general retail theft have become all too common.  The Newmarket Business Association (NBA) has revealed a new strategy in their efforts to stamp out crime. The NBA has taken the bold move to bring their precinct patrol services in-house and have tripled the size of their security team.

From 1st February 2023 Newmarket’s mobile patrol services operates under a new name - NEWMARKET SECURITY – protecting our precinct 7 days a week.

NBA have also built a new Communications Hub located within the Newmarket Police Station and married this to a new $300k CCTV camera network that includes ANPR cameras to record car journey times and provide instant notification to Police of stolen vehicles coming into the area.

Brian McCarthy (CCTV Surveillance Officer), William Olaaiga (Mobile Patrol Officer), Lopeti Tulikihakau (Mobile Patrol Officer), Mark Knoff Thomas (NBA CEO), Tyrone Uelese (Mobile Patrol Officer) and Ray Siliko (Mobile Patrol Lead).

Mark Knoff-Thomas, NBA CEO commented “We have been working hard on how we can bolster security to better support our businesses. The CCTV upgrade has allowed us to expand coverage to the whole of the precinct and fill in any black spots we had previously. The new patrol team will be out walking the beat every day, connected to the Hub via a new radio system, and being guided by our CCTV Surveillance Officer. We’d like to acknowledge the NZ Police for their amazing support and helping get this initiative off the ground, and Auckland Transport for their help and cooperation. Plus Newmarket-based Andrew Simms for sorting us out with a Kia Stonic patrol car.”

Scott Bain, CEO of SaferCities said, “We are extremely proud to support NBA with designing their state of the art, wide-area CCTV system and have Auckland Transport’s support for NBA to use AT poles.  Support and collaboration from Police has also been fantastic to watch and something the NBA should be very proud of.  Peter Mason and Josh Packer from PowerComs and Deon Steenkamp from McKay have also gone above and beyond.”
