The Perfect Brew

Reading Time: 4 Minutes

We speak to Phill Kearney, La Marzocco New Zealand Coffee Educator and Technical Coordinator about all things coffee.

La Marzocco is synonymous with high-end espresso coffee machines, founded in 1927 the brand has over 100 years of experience in creating the perfect cup of coffee. As a nation of self-proclaimed coffee connoisseurs, we are very particular about our daily caffeine hit. Whether you like your coffee strong, sweet or with a sprinkle of cinnamon on the top, we know a good brew, and now the iconic coffee machines that you see in your favourite cafés have been redesigned to fit in your kitchen. Phill Kearney takes us through all things coffee and La Marzocco.

Can you tell us a bit about La Marzocco?

We are an Italian brand that makes beautiful and superbly crafted espresso machines with exquisite attention to detail for both home and commercial use.

Our New Zealand branch has a La Marzocco showroom and technical workshop in Parnell – not far from Newmarket. We welcome the coffee community to stop by to visit us and share a coffee.  We also host regular events such as our Home Barista Workshop Series which I’ve been teaching.

Where are La Marzocco machines from?

Our machines are handmade in Florence by artisan professionals since 1927.

Where is your go-to brunch spot in Newmarket?

I really enjoy Leafe which is self-proclaimed as “not your average mall café”. They serve coffee on the La Marzocco KB90 and they do an all-day breakfast which is great if you’ve had a bit of a sleep in.

Who is the La Marzocco Customer?

The La Marzocco customer is anyone who is passionate about coffee, whatever stage they are in their espresso journey. We make the machines that New Zealanders see in their favourite cafés and restaurants all over the country, and now you can bring the café home with a range of machines designed for your kitchen.

Our customers appreciate design, consistency and reliability which is why they choose a machine that will last them for many years to come.

Any tips on making the perfect espresso?

Remember to measure things just like you would if you were baking.  Measure how much coffee you use and how much espresso you make. Always use good quality water, and of course, a good quality espresso machine that is consistent like the Linea Mini or GS3, and most of all, enjoy the process the process. Espresso is a journey!

What is your go to coffee order?

For me it’s a small flat white, double shot.

What is your favourite coffee dish?

I have a bit of a sweet tooth and tiramisu is delicious! Did you know that in Italian tiramisu translates to “a pick-me up” because in the traditional recipe ladyfingers are soaked in espresso coffee?

Name one thing you can’t live without

I couldn’t live without my Fellow Stag Kettle EKG. I make all my tea and coffee with it and allows me to adjust the temperature to anything I need, not to mention, it’s nice to pour with.

Favourite thing about Newmarket?

The shops, cafés and dinner options in Newmarket are abundant. I also enjoy playing games at the local arcade.

What is your favourite brand extension or colab for La Marzocco?

I’m really excited about the collaboration between Lamborghini, a fellow iconic Italian brand, and La Marzocco Home. We created a custom designed Linea Mini that pays homage to their super-sports car, the Huracán STO. You’ll be able to see this bespoke machine at Festival Italiano in Newmarket and even have the chance to win it!

Are there any exciting developments in the pipeline for La Marzocco for 2023?

Keep your eyes peeled - you just might see something new from La Marzocco Home. We’re always innovating to give people the best possible coffee experience. If you want to stay up to date, follow us on Instagram at @lamarzocchomenz or hop on our website nz.lamarzoccohome.com and subscribe.
