When it comes to eclectic dining options, Newmarket has no shortage. For some, Khyber Pass Road’s eateries are unchartered waters and for others they are the hidden gems. We have put together an extensive list of eateries that are a must-visit when on the hunt for new foodie destinations in Newmarket.

Selera

A regular on the ‘Best Cheap Eats’ lists in Auckland, Selera offers the very best of Malaysian cuisine. Regulars know that you need to get in early to secure a table, which indicates just how good the food is. Insider tip: Their Roti Canai and Laksa could quite possibly be the best in the city.

Ichiban

If Ramen is what you are after, look no further than Newmarket’s very own Ichiban. With over 30 years serving up both unconventional and classic styled Ramen, there is a wide range of fillings, toppings, flavours and much more. This authentic Japanese soup and noodle dish is a must-have, their most popular dish is the Stamina Ramen. Named for its wholesome and warming ingredients; chicken, noodles, diced pork, an assortment of vegetables and a rich starchy sauce, we suggest adding corn to the toppings – the ultimate soul food.

The Lumsden Freehouse

The popularity of craft beer shows no sign of slowing down and where better to get a taste of the best than Newmarket’s very own Lumsden Freehouse. Their menu offers up a hearty mix of towering burgers, spicy wings, summer salads and a variety of pizzas. Our top pick would have to be the brisket and blue cheese. Grab a table outside and settle in for an afternoon of craft beers, burgers and people watching in the sunshine.

Sun World Chinese Restaurant

Those who know, will know that Sun World is one of Newmarket’s busiest hidden gems. Tucked away on the corner of Khyber Pass and York Street, this bustling hub serves up an authentic Yum Cha that is arguably one of the best in Auckland, and if you haven’t experienced the classic Chinese brunch then Sun World is the perfect spot to start. It has all the staples - steamed pork buns, shrimp dumplings - but we can’t go past the rice noodles in a spicy seafood sauce.

Doolan Brothers

If it’s a traditional pub catch-up you’re after, then look no further than Doolan Brothers. Doolan’s offering includes traditional Irish fare such as bangers and mash, Guinness Pies and Origin South Lamb Shank, along with several gourmet pizza options, entrees and salads. Check their Facebook page regularly as Doolan’s often host special events like Bitchin’ Bingo and pool competitions.  There’s a weekly pub quiz too, which we hear can get quite competitive!

TianFu Noodles

The eateries in this mini precinct are varied, authentic and at the top of the list of places you need to know about is TianFu Noodles. Offering a wide variety of noodle dishes both hot and cold, with their most popular being the shaved noodles – if you like spice, than this is the place for you. We highly recommend the DanDan Noodle Soup, hearty, spicy and the ultimate winter warmer especially if you’re on a budget.

Canton Grill Seafood Restaurant

If you are looking for a great spot for a Friday night BYO, Canton Grill Seafood Restaurant is the place to go. Offering a delicious range of Chinese banquet style dishes, their seafood is fresh and authentic. With sizzling seafood platters, salt and pepper squid, seafood fried noodles and everything in between. This is one of Newmarket’s most popular cheap eats spots and a must-visit if you are unfamiliar. We can always say their BBQ Pork is some of the best in town.

Delight Spice Indian

There’s nothing more comforting than a Friday night curry, and Delight Spice Indian on Khyber Pass are aptly named. Their authentic curries are packed with flavour and their extensive menu offering is always fresh and delicious. We definitely recommend the Matar Paneer, a vegetarian curry that consists of peas, paneer, potatoes in a spicy and flavorsome sauce. Added bonus - they are BYO!

You can’t go past a steaming bowl of wonton noodle soup and one of the best spots in Newmarket for this dish is Sunrise Hong Kong Café. Nestled amongst the myriad of eateries on Khyber Pass Road, this foodie favourite always serves up quick, easy and cheap Chinese delicacies.

Red Fire BBQ Restaurant

Calling all carnivores! If you haven’t tried Newmarket’s favourite Chinese barbeque – then you should probably book a table ASAP. Only open in the evenings, this popular spot offers an authentic cook-it-yourself experience in which you choose your cuts of meats as well as vegetables to cook on a flaming barbeque. Don’t forget to order a side of the Cucumber with Sour & Spicy sauce too.

Kuai Dian Eatery

Sichuan cuisine at it's finest - Kuai Dian serves fresh handmade dumplings (assembled right in front of you), noodles and authentic Chinese dishes. Dine in or takeaway.
