Today, Karen Walker has launched what could be the brand’s most iconic collaboration yet. To celebrate Mickey Mouse’s 90th Birthday next month, the famed New Zealand designer has teamed up with Disney to create a global collection of clothing, eyewear and jewellery by giving the brand’s iconic Runaway Girl a Mickey Mouse makeover.
This collection comes as a huge honour, as Karen Walker is the first and only designer from Australasia to have been asked by Disney to create a collection for its global celebration alongside brands including Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Opening Ceremony.
Launching Wednesday 7 November, the collection’s central motif is Mickey Mouse toting the Karen Walker Runaway Girl’s signature bindle. The Runaway Girl is seventeen this year and is still one of the most popular fine jewellery pieces and this is the first time she’s ever been modified. For Karen, this was a natural progression as like Mickey and Minnie, the Runaway Girl has always stood for adventure and fun.
The collection includes t-shirts and sweatshirts, eyewear, fine jewellery, accessories and a commemorative plate and mug. To launch this collection, the Karen Walker store in Newmarket will have a Disney pop-up until Christmas.
To launch the Newmarket Disney pop-up, Karen herself will be hosting a special event in-store to celebrate this Saturday 10 November. There will be sweet treats and bubbles, with a Disney x Karen Walker $20,000 lucky dip giveaway where all guests will be invited to have a go on a claw machine to try and win one of $20,000 worth of prizes. Prizes include limited edition collectables from the Disney x Karen Walker collab.
