Jessica Gomes on David Jones' arrival

Reading Time: 5 Minutes

November is set to be an exciting month with the arrival of David Jones’ first Auckland store in Newmarket. The Australian department store will open inside the newly revamped Westfield Newmarket with a world class offering of beauty, fashion, food and home and hundreds of local and international brands. Zara Overton spoke with international model and David Jones’ ambassador Jessica Gomes ahead of the opening...

We’re thrilled that David Jones is arriving soon in Newmarket. What are you most excited about the new store opening?

We are so excited to be bringing David Jones to Newmarket. It’s always really exciting to see the reactions of our customers when we open a new store, especially in New Zealand.

David Jones is well known for having an exceptional service offering, from instore stylists to alterations. What can we expect to see in their first Auckland store?

You’ll have to wait and see! Expect the best of local and international brands and incredible instore services. There are some amazing brands coming your way I can’t wait to reveal.

What are some of your favourite brands that we will be seeing at DJs?

There are too many to name but I’m really looking forward to Bec & Bridge, Aje. and Camilla and Marc.

What are some of your favourite Spring/ Summer trends?

All the bright colours! Tailored pant suits and dressing head to toe in one colour.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve just finished watching Euphoria on HBO so I’ve had their soundtrack on repeat. Some amazing tracks from Charlotte Day Wilson, Lizzo and Anderson.Paak.

Favourite NZ designers?

NZ designers are some of my absolute favourites. I love Kate Sylvester and Karen Walker and love Deadly Ponies bags. I’ve also just discovered Harris Tapper too.

Heels or flats?

Flats! I’m wearing a great pair of Veja sneakers right now.

Have you noticed any differences in the way that New Zealanders and Australians dress?

Definitely. Kiwis are more adventurous in their silhouette choices than Australians.
I think Australians probably wear more colour but Kiwis are a bit more creative in their wardrobe choices. Edgier maybe?

You’ve been modelling for David Jones since 2013, do you have a favourite show memory?

One of my favourite seasons was House of Spring, we had an all-star line up of Victoria Lee, Adut Akech, Karolina Kurkova and Anwar Hadid. It was such a beautiful show. That and two seasons ago at MONA in Tasmania. That will stay with me forever.

What has been your best fashion investment?

My YSL handbag was a significant purchase and one that has stood the test of time. It looks better with age and is a beautiful classic shape.

And your worst?

There have been a few pairs of designer sunglasses over the years that I regret. I don’t lose any sleep over questionable wardrobe choices though.

Between the travel and work, where will we find you in your down time?

My ultimate downtime is at home with my family in Perth, Western Australia.

You’ve also founded your own skincare line, Equal Beauty. What made you decide to launch into skincare?

I spend hundreds of hours on a plane every year and was always on the lookout for quality products I could travel with. I also wanted to create products with Korean beauty knowledge behind them, and so that’s what inspired me to start. Equal Beauty is a labour of love, blending the best of Korean beauty technology made at home in Australia.

What 5 things would we always find in your fridge?

Lots of fruit and vegetables, cold pressed juice, brown rice sushi and my Equal Beauty Moisture Eye Veils.

You’ve also come on board as a World Vision Ambassador, what was most important to you when teaming up with World Vision?

The most important thing to me was being part of an organisation that supports so many causes I am passionate about. I have been lucky enough to see first-hand how World Vision have been able to improve children’s health and access to quality education, and the ways in which they empower women through small business training. World Vision is an incredible organisation that I am so honoured to be a part of.

As an international model who travels a lot, how do you spend your time on a plane?

Whilst on the plane, I like to take a break from technology and catch up on sleep! I make sure I stay super hydrated by consuming lots of water during the flight and relaxing with my Equal Beauty Moisture Veil mask and constant sprays of my Equal Beauty Super Mist.

You’ve got 10 minutes to get ready before you head out on a surprise date. What are you wearing?

A blazer and jeans is my go-to look. Great with sneakers but I’ve also been wearing it with a pair of strappy mid-height heels by Rejina Pyo recently to mix it up.

If you weren’t modelling, what would you be doing?

I’ve been lucky enough to work with David Jones and in this industry for a long time, I can’t imagine what life would be like if I had chosen another career path. I’m passionate about the work that I do for World Vision, so it would be important that I could give back in whatever I did.

David Jones will open in Westfield Newmarket on the 21st of November.
