Hospitality New Zealand

Newmarket is a bustling suburb for both local and international visitors, with a great reputation for good shopping, food, hospitality and entertainment. People come from across and out of town to experience all that it has to offer.

Auckland Council has always helped fund the region’s destination marketing, major and cultural events – a key investment that promotes and attracts the public to destinations like Newmarket.

Under Auckland Council’s Long Term Plan, there is a proposal to reduce funding for these initiatives. Despite the current $5 million gap in funding, Hospitality NZ believes that further cuts to economic development and visitor attraction activities will hamper future investment in the region and could damage Auckland’s reputation as a destination. There is a real possibility that reduced funding will see Auckland miss out on concert tours, sports and cultural events, as well as business events – all key components that keep our city and neighborhoods like Newmarket abuzz.

We have submitted to the Council on its proposal recommending it reallocates funding from other areas of the LTP to economic and cultural development to allow the destination marketing and events attraction work to continue - or at least until other funding models can be developed; because after all, this investment is essential in keeping our region vibrant and communities connected.
