Create a Moment of Zen at Home with Shelley Ferguson

Reading Time: 6 Minutes

In celebration of the Starbucks at Home and Freedom partnership, specially curated coffee nooks have been created by influential Kiwi stylists inside four of Freedom's stores, including their Newmarket home, showcasing ways of incorporating the beautiful daily coffee ritual into your home with some clever pieces from Freedom.

As a nation of coffee lovers, it's no wonder this moment of me-time ranks so highly on our priority lists. “Whether you like to enjoy your coffee in a specially designed coffee nook, in your home office, or soaking up the sun outdoors, Kiwis can take inspiration from our stylists’ looks to create their ideal space to savour a cup of Starbucks by Nespresso.” Fern Castellanos, Nestlé New Zealand Head of Marketing.

Freedom partnered with the ever-stylish interior designer and The Block judge Shelley Ferguson to create her own coffee nook, and the moment of pure zen from this space will leave you feeling relaxed, revived and ready to take on the day.

We caught up with Shelley to find our her inspiration, favourite pieces from the Freedom Summer range and some key rules to recreate her look in your own home.

Can you tell about how this partnership came about?

I think it's great that we are seeing more collaborations now of brands that probably have quite a bit in common but that sit in different categories. Starbucks definitely crosses into that home category, when you have your coffee, you want to create that nice space to really enjoy the ritual at home. Freedom has lots of zones and settings already in store, but what if people could take a moment, stay there a bit longer and enjoy a coffee and feel the space a bit more.

When we go into these stores everything is already curated for us, hence the idea of bringing in four designers with quite different styles to pull together what they thought, not just keeping things within the same ranges, to see what they could create with the pieces. And really showing customers that you can shop differently, and thats where I came in.

When you were creating your coffee nook, was there a key piece that you started with?

When I am designing any space, I will find a piece of furniture or a piece of stone that forms the colour palette within it. I spotted a big sideboard with natural wood with a beautiful grain through it and marble on the top, it gave me a neutral but tonal colour palette to work from. I then found the coffee table which again, has so many tones within it, not being a solid white, which you can pull from to create the style for the whole room.

What was the overall theme for your space?

What I really wanted was, a calming space. I spend a lot of time at home, and like to create little areas and multi purpose zones, but they have to make you feel a certain way. When I am having a coffee moment, whether its while checking emails, or reading a magazine, it's not on the run, I like to be able to sit and have quite a calming area which sets me up for the rest of the day. For me, it was in a living room, really comfortable, nothing too colourful or bold, a beautiful zen space.

For Kiwi's wanting to recreate your look, what are the main rules to stick to in order to achieve this style?

I think when you are working with a tonal colour palette where everything is within a colour family, make sure you push to the edges of the colour family, make sure you are bringing in those darker neutrals as well as the lighter ones and also lots of texture. I brought in leather, boucle, a woven rug, and art with texture and depth to the paint strokes. And of course layering pieces, so with the coffee table, I added another small ottoman beside it. When you are working with a light colour palette you need to add visual interest and use the vertical wall space too.

If you split your space into thirds, often we will fill only the lower third, and there is nothing above which can throw off the balance from top to bottom. So by adding the side board behind the sofa, adding a large piece of art and a lamp, your area will be much more visually appealing and well balanced.

What about if you are short on space, what are your tips to achieve this look?

For one of the stores I styled as part of this campaign, I was working with a much smaller space and so instead of the large sofa, I opted for a smaller daybed, looking at ranges of furniture that are made for more compact spaces is key. If you have a small room, you don't want to fill it with a huge sofa, it will feel full very quickly.

Choose furniture that you can multipurpose, and try bringing in some curves as well. In small spaces it's nice to soften the hard lines, and the lighter colours will also help make the space feel more open. I would also use those vertical spaces, opt for a pendant light rather than down lights, this will give a small space far more interest and impact.

If you can't do built in storage all the way up, choosing a thin console or sideboard will pack in lots of storage space and also give you a surface to add in accessories.
