Drive Chinese Consumers to your business and accept Chinese payment systems

The number of Chinese tourists and consumers is increasing year-on-year in New Zealand. 400,000 Chinese tourists visited the country for the year ending January 2018, approximately 25,000 Chinese students study here and over 180,000 Chinese live in New Zealand. Chinese visitor expenditure in New Zealand has reached $1.5 billion in the year to June 2017.

Is your business ready for the continued growth of this market and are you accepting Chinese payment systems?

Being able to offer Chinese consumers the option of paying with the method and currency they are used to drives sales. It instantly gives the message you welcome Chinese guests and for tourists it is far less daunting and more convenient. For a small business, it’s a lot more realistic than employing Mandarin speaking staff and for larger retailers, there is the benefit of increased spend per transaction.

The most common Chinese payment systems are Union Pay (card payment) and Alipay and WeChat Pay (both mobile payments with QR code functionality).

UnionPay Card payment

UnionPay is the only card scheme in China. They provide high quality, cost effective and secure cross-border payment services to the world’s largest cardholder base and ensures convenient local services to a growing number of global UnionPay cardholders and merchants. In New Zealand, UnionPay is accepted at over 50,000 merchants and 85% of ATMs, and about 80% of local merchants are expected to accept UnionPay cards before 2019. Purchases by Chinese tourists will be directly deducted from UnionPay cardholders’ CNY accounts and converted directly into Chinese Yuan without any currency conversion fees. Chinese customers who prefer mobile payment can also easily make tap-and-go payments with their UnionPay chip cards and QuickPass-enabled mobile phones.

Alipay and WeChat Pay – Chinese mobile payment systems

Alipay or WeChat Pay logo is a familiar beacon and a simple way to engage with Chinese consumers. WeChat and Alipay control over 90% of China’s $5.5 trillion mobile payment market. Both systems generate QR codes and you will often see both platforms at point of sale. Both services offer no transaction fees except for large withdrawals. Payment can simply be created between the mobile phone of the customer and your computer in store (as long as you have an internet / WiFi connection). Your business can also adopt a presence and marketing strategy beyond payment.

Alipay launched in 2004 and allows Alipay users to make payments on China’s largest e-commerce marketplaces (Tmall).

WeChat Pay launched in 2013 and integrates into China’s most popular social media platform WeChat (one billion users). Every WeChat user has access to WeChat Pay as long as their account is linked with their bank.
