Twenty Questions with Emlyn Llyod of Masfen Group

Asset Manager Emlyn Lloyd shares one of Newmarket's best kept secrets you will all want to note, along with what he loves most about his job at Masfen Group.

 

Why do you love working in Newmarket?

There is always something interesting happening.  You can meet people for dinner and drinks, get your essentials, grab a coffee, exercise, and go to the movies.

What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who was looking at starting out in your industry?

Being honest with yourself and other people is a great start and will go a long way towards developing long term partnerships.

What would you do if you weren't in your current role?

Something that interests me and that I am passionate about. I have a real interest in mountain biking at the moment, so that sounds good to me.

Name your top three favourite songs. 

I have recently purchased a record player so any of the records that are being played through that are my favourites.

What was your first job?

I was a retail assistant selling men’s clothing at Warnocks on Queen Street back when Friday night shopping was a thing.

What motivates you? 

I am motivated by people who are passionate about what they do, and really push to better themselves. Watching sport and seeing excellence at the highest level is an example of this.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? 

I am happy to stay in Auckland, with all of the benefits of modern living and having close access to so many world class outdoor activities.

Where is your favourite place to get coffee or a drink in Newmarket? 

Any of the cafes or bars on Lumsden Green are a great place to meet for a drink and enjoy the sun.

Describe Newmarket in 3 words:

Vibrant, dynamic, interesting.

What do you wish you’d known before you started your career? 

That change was going to be such a big factor in the current era and having the ability to adapt to it. 

How do you start each morning? 

Exercise and enjoying the sunrise with my wife and dog.

What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve received? 

Currently it is to sing Happy Birthday twice while washing your hands.  

What is your favourite holiday destination and why? 

I travelled to Tokyo last year and that was so inspiring. The pace of life and the way people live there promotes getting out and about after work, eating, meeting people and shopping late.  

What is Newmarket’s best kept secret? 

The hidden bus lane camera on Khyber Pass 

What would you consider to be your greatest achievement? 

Being happily married with three kids.

Name one item that you can’t live without. 

This summer it has been my Swell drink bottle which has helped to keep me hydrated in the heat.  

It’s 10am on a Sunday morning.  Where would we find you and what are you doing? 

Generally at a sporting event with one of my kids. At the moment it would be at Okahu Bay with my 11 year old son who is learning to sail. 

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? 

My late grandfather who fought in the war returned to New Zealand and raised a family. He was builder who helped to shape the Country through hard work and integrity.

What is your greatest fear? 

Coping with my three children who are heading into their teenage years!

What do you love most about your job?

The way in which property helps to facilitate business growth. It is exciting to see businesses creating a community through the spaces that they use.
