Olympic Pool celebrates 80 years

Reading Time: 1 Minute

Used by champion and beginner swimmers alike, The Olympic Pool has recently celebrated its 80th year as an Auckland landmark and community hub for generations of Aucklanders. The pool was originally constructed in 1940 for the Empire Games and has hosted many international swimming events, rock concerts, boxing matches and film premieres over the past eight decades.

To mark the anniversary, impressive redevelopment plans have been proposed which will enhance the facilities and environment to offer the community and visitors an even better experience.  This redevelopment proposal comes 15 years after the last and will include a new entrance from Davis Crescent and the incorporation of infrastructure to reuse rainwater and introduce solar power. Managing Director of Olympic Pool and Fitness Centre John Fay wants to ensure the pool “is maintained and developed so that it is relevant and part of the community for many decades to come”.

The Olympic Pool hosted a private function in February, along with a free swimming day for the Auckland community in celebration of the historic 80th birthday.
