Newmarket Locals - Margeaux Frizelle from Juliette Hogan

Reading Time: 4 Minutes

Tucked away in the cobbled streets of Osborne Lane, the Newmarket Juliette Hogan store is a large, light-filled space akin to an art gallery, filled with the brands iconic New Zealand made garments for the modern woman. We sat down with Margeaux, the Newmarket store manager to find out a little bit more...

N. What do you do?

I manage the Newmarket Juliette Hogan store.

N. Have you always worked in fashion? Tell us a little bit about how you came to be part of the Juliette Hogan team.

I graduated from Victoria University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies, so fashion was definitely not what I started off in. I started working at JH at the end of 2017 and was attracted to the job because the brand’s values were aligned with my own. I have slowly progressed within the brand since then and I absolutely love it.

N. There is growing discussion around fast-fashion and the idea of sustainability in the fashion industry. What is your advice on how to become more of a conscious consumer?

Buy once and buy better. At Juliette Hogan we focus on longevity for our garments through both design and materials and we take the time to inform our customers as to how best care for their garments. We also offer repair services on our clothes and encourage our customers to pass on / resell at the end of their life.

N. With consumers becoming increasingly aware of the ethics surrounding fashion and the appreciation for quality NZ-made garments, have you noticed any patterns with your Juliette Hogan clientele?

We have noticed more customers asking for transparency around where our clothes come from. Our customers love and appreciate that where-ever possible, Juliette Hogan clothing is made in New Zealand, and this is something we are really proud of.

N. When building a capsule wardrobe for your customers, what are your top five must-haves?

The wardrobing we do for our customers will change depending on their lifestyle, job and personal style and for this reason I don’t believe there is a one-fits-all capsule wardrobe. The pieces I am always reaching for are my Alice Blouse in white, Marjorie Blouse, black satin Saga Skirt and Leonard Pants in block stripe. Another winter must-have is the beautiful Clare Sweater in our seasonal colour kale.

N. We love the new AW19 collection, what are your favourite pieces?

I am obsessed with the Loren Jumpsuit in block stripe silk belted up with our new leather belts!! My other favourite pieces are the Wool Silk Suiting Jane Shirt and Connor Pant, the Cotton Sweatshirt in Lolly and the Stanley Pant in Wool Rose Suiting.

N. What are three major trends that you are picking for 2019?

  • One colour tonal outfits
  • Tiny handbags that you can’t fit anything in
  • The colour pink!

N. Name three trends you don’t want to see return in 2019.

  • Super long statement sleeves
  • Off the shoulder tops
  • Chunky dad sneakers

N. How would you describe your style?

Since working at JH my personal style has changed a lot and I just like to have fun with what I’m wearing. At the moment anything goes!

N. Who is your fashion icon?

I don’t have one specific icon, I take inspiration from all over the place. I spend a lot of my time at work talking about fashion so I am always looking for unexpected combinations and new ways to style pieces.

N. Favourite spot to grab a coffee in Newmarket?

Hands down, The Candy Shop in Osborne Lane makes the best coffee.
