The Poi Room

Outside In by Kirsty Nixon

Where better to gather your thoughts, to find peace, to cry, to discover, to get your hands dirty, to kiss, to meditate, to meet, to eat, to breathe out… than a garden.

Throughout art week, visitors will receive a complimentary 2025 The Poi Room Artist calendar.

Delve - 3 Painters | 3 Practices | 3 Processes by Karen Covic, Ruth Phipps and Jo Dalgety

This exhibition features works from Karen Covic, Ruth Phipps and Jo Dalgety. These three artists share a connection through their association with Railway Street Gallery and first-year study in the Whitecliffe School of Fine Arts Master of Arts programme. Together, as individual artists, they explore their internal motivations in mark-making.

12th of October: Attend an exclusive Q&A session with the three artists from 3pm-5pm.

Sanderson

Nohoaka toi ki Puketeraki by Simon Kaan & Wi Taepa

The exhibition will present a series of new work produced by the artists that were made over the course of a residency in August 2024 in the village of Karitane, just north of Dunedin. The exhibition includes an ink-on-fibre glass series by Kaan, a collection of hand-printed ceramic works by Taepa, and ink and kōkōwai art on cotton rag prints.

12th October: Attend an exclusive coffee and croissant morning from 10am-12pm at Sanderson. View the exhibition and enjoy complimentary coffee and croissants by Candyshop.

Perpetual by Yoshiko & Shintaro Nakahara

This exhibition features work from Japanese-born husband and wife duo, who were both formally trained in separate art schools in Tokyo – Shinataro at Tama Art University and Yoshiko at Musashino Art University. Their practices are concerned with precision and planning and they share an intuitivec approach to mark making. Shintaro uses pure aesthetic forms that mimic calligraphy; using bright, solid colour and rigidly controlled lines that suggest gestural actions. Yoshiko works over this, often exclusively with black ink, with painstakingly built and small-scale individual strokes and washes. The artist uses this mark-making process to create multiple levels of patterns which often result in natural forms. This complex process reveals the unusual collaboration between the artists and the unique contemplative nature of their work.

19th October: Attend an exclusive coffee and croissant morning from 10am-12pm at Sanderson. View the exhibition and enjoy complimentary coffee and croissants by Candyshop.
