Celebrating Lunar New Year in Newmarket

With Lunar New Year officially beginning on February 5, we have put together a handy guide to understanding and celebrating Lunar New Year – where to shop, where to eat, what to wear and how to celebrate!

Chinese New Year is celebrated across 23 days, the final climax of the festivities is marked by a four day long Lantern Festival (also known as Yuan Xiao (元宵节—yuán xiāo jié). This 2000-year-old tradition has over time developed many meanings, but the core of the celebration is acknowledging family reunions and society. Many activities during the festival include moon gazing, lighting lanterns, riddles, lion dances and eating rice balls.

One of Auckland’s biggest celebrations, The Auckland Lantern Festival is the annual Chinese New Year celebration held in the Auckland Domain. This colourful event showcases more than 800 illuminated, homemade Chinese Lanterns. As well as a stage filled with traditional entertainment and a plethora of delicacies to taste and try. The festival will be held in Auckland Domain from February 14 – 17, and with the domain being just small walk from Newmarket there are plenty of parking options. If you are looking for a bite to eat beforehand, Newmarket is home to a number of popular Chinese restaurants that stick with the theme of the evening, before heading along to the Festival to enjoy the entertainment.

Pearl Garden (Teed Street) and Sunworld Chinese Restaurant (York Street) are two of our top recommendations, offering what is arguably Newmarket’s most authentic Chinese fare, with traditional Chinese New Year dinners. And to ensure you’re in the spirit, include fish for prosperity, dumplings for wealth, and longevity noodles for happiness.

By tradition, this occasion is a time to refresh your wardrobe with new clothes and material items, suggesting and symbolising a new start. Red is the colour symbolic to these celebrations so head into Newmarket for a little shopping before the festival. We have rounded up some of our favourite finds to help you mark the occasion…
