Highwic is a heritage property set in a green oasis in the heart of Newmarket, Auckland. The original home was built in 1862 for the Buckland family, and is located in beautiful grounds that are open for the public to explore and enjoy. The house museum is open to visit from Wednesday to Sunday. Visitors get an insight into the lives of this large Victorian family who were instrumental in the commercial development of Newmarket and surrounding areas, and whose descendants lived in the property until the late 1970s when it was sold to Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and Auckland Council. Exploring the rooms of this unique Carpenter Gothic mansion, visitors will see furniture, objects and artwork that reflect life in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and gain an insight into the lives and interests of the family, which included 21 children. |
