We caught up with Phillip Chapman, Coach at Body Torque to find out a little bit more about working in Newmarket, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and the best spot in the precinct to get a coffee...

N. Why do you love working in Newmarket?

I love the energy, the people, the food and the coffee.

N. What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who was looking at starting out in your industry?

Lead by example. It’s very difficult for us to give guidance without first knowing what it feels like for our clients.

N. What would you do if you weren’t in your current role?

I would still love to teach, I have just started learning Te Reo and I would love to teach it.

N. Name your top three favourite songs.

Don’t Forget Your Roots by Six60, Into You by Fabolous and Stir It Up by Bob Marley.

N. What was your first job?

Butchery Assistant.

N. What motivates you?

My little girl, my culture and just being able to live life on my terms without worrying if my body is up to it.

N. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

French Polynesia has always had an appeal, the culture, climate and cuisine really fascinates me.

N. Where is your favourite place to get coffee or a drink in Newmarket?

I love Aqua Cafe; our Body Torque community spend a lot of time there outside of the gym to chat and nourish the body after exercise. Not to mention the famous Burmeister breakfast and Body Torque smoothie.

N. Describe Newmarket in three words:

Vibrant, positive, active.

N. What do you wish you’d known before you started your career?

How important a good accountant is!

N. How do you start each morning?

I start with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar a tall glass of water and recite my daily gratitude. It puts my body and mind in a great place before I start the day. Then I make the bed.

N. What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve received?

Exercise is but 3% of your week, focus on improving the other 97%.

N. What is your favourite holiday destination and why?

The Islands, I absolutely love the water and the sun, washed down with some cold beverages of course.

N. What is Newmarket’s best kept secret?

The polenta chips at The Candy Shop one hundred percent. It seems to always come back to food.

N. Name one item that you can’t live without.

My phone.

N. What would you consider to be your greatest achievement?

In my first year of Premier Club Cricket we won the inaugural 20/20 competition and made the One Day final at Eden Park unfortunately losing to a strong Howick Pakuranga team that day.

N. It’s 10am on a Sunday morning. Where would we find you and what are you doing?

Going for a bike ride and having brunch with my little girl.

N. Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

My two colleagues at Body Torque and Dave Letele. They have helped support me, transform my body, but more importantly my mind. Dave has been a massive inspiration in helping our Pacific Island and Māori Community.

N. What is your greatest fear?

My greatest fear is not death but living life without purpose.

N. What do you love most about your job?

Seeing the joy on people’s faces when they’ve overcome an obstacle and done something they never thought they could do.
