Reading Time: 3 Minutes

We caught up with Carl Sowter, Director at Marley Loft to find out a little bit more about working in Newmarket for over 20 years, the changing landscape of technology, and much more...

N. Why do you love working in Newmarket?

Newmarket has a great community feel and over the years I have built up some great friendships with local business people. Marley Loft have been in Newmarket since 1995.

N. What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who was looking at starting out in your industry?

Make sure that you know technology. As Chartered Accountants everything that we do during the day uses some form of technology to do it.

N. What would you do if you weren’t in your current role?

If I could do something else, it would be a horticulturist. I love plants and feel I have a bit of a green thumb.

N. Name your top three favourite songs.

The first cassette I purchased has my favourite song on it, Don’t You Want Me by The Human League (got to see them perform recently, incredible). Same Love (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis) and Diamonds (Rihanna).

N. What was your first job?

A bit of a surprise to some people is that I worked in a non- ferrous foundry for one month before I started my first full time job which was here at Marley Loft back in 1986. 33 years later I now own the company with my business partner. I’m not really one to move around.

N. What motivates you?

Building relationships with clients for the long haul. We have some clients who have been with us for 3 and 4 generations. Getting to know the client and their business in order to help them grow their business into what they have always wanted.

N. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

On a tropical island somewhere in the Pacific (still working my way through them all before making a final decision).

N. Where is your favourite place to get coffee or a drink in Newmarket?

Not really a coffee drinker. Those who know me, know where to find me at 4.30pm on a Friday afternoon ... at The Lumsden Freehouse sipping on my favourite Sileni Chardonnay. Love the community atmosphere down there.

N. Describe Newmarket in 3 words:

Growing, Community and Rejuvenating.

N. What do you wish you’d known before you started your career?

The impact that technology would have on everything we do as Chartered Accountants.

N. How do you start each morning?

Slowly ... with a cup of Earl Grey tea and the AM Show on Three.

N. What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve received?

Just do it, it won’t seem as bad as you think.

N. What is your favourite holiday destination and why?

A beach in the Pacific Islands. It used to be anywhere with a lot of shops, but now I just like to relax and unwind.

N. What is Newmarket’s best kept secret?

All of the night time eateries in Newmarket. It is amazing, sometimes you find this little night time food place that you didn’t even know existed, then you try it and it becomes another one added to your go-to list when dining in Newmarket after hours.

N. What would you consider to be your greatest achievement?

Starting straight from school at Marley Loft and then ending
