20 Questions with Brad Hagstrom - Joint CEO of Harmoney

We caught up with Brad Hagstrom - joint CEO of Harmoney to find out why he loves working in Newmarket, the best part of his job and an advice for someone starting out in the financial technology industry...

N. Why do you love working in Newmarket?

The good transport options. I can now train and e-scooter to work. I also love that our office is right across the road from The Domain. And Delight Spice is just a short scooter ride away for lunch.

N. What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who was looking at starting out in your industry?

You can’t work in fintech if you don’t have an e-scooter! Or - just be really excited about finding new ways of doing things, and new ways of thinking about things.

N. What would you do if you weren’t in your current role?

Starting up another company or, more likely, running a surf shop on the Gold Coast

N. Name your top three favourite songs.

I don’t have a top 3, but my current playlist includes 90’s classics; Nirvana, Chilli Peppers and Soundgarden.

N. What was your first job?

Picking kiwifruit out west in the school holidays.

N. What motivates you?

A good night’s sleep!

N. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

Fiji. Easy.

N. Where is your favourite place to get coffee or a drink in Newmarket?

Santos is my daily cappuccino fix.

N. Describe Newmarket in 3 words:

Changing, busy, tasty.

N. What do you wish you’d known before you started your career?

That one day I’d be a fintech CEO.

N. How do you start each morning?

After my first coffee it is making my kids’ lunches.

N. What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve received?

Make sure you take the kerb at the right angle on your e-scooter.

N. What is your favourite holiday destination and why?

Fiji. Love the people and the surf. I am a regular visitor.

N. What is Newmarket’s best kept secret?

The lunch special at Delight Spice.

N. What would you consider to be your greatest achievement?

In less than 5 years, together with Neil Roberts, joint CEO of Harmoney, we have built an engaged team and driven a leading online consumer lender business combining process and credit automation to deliver a world class customer experience.

N. Name one item that you can’t live without.

Enough sleep.

N. It’s 10am on a Sunday morning. Where would we find you and what are you doing?

In the winter you’ll find me being a soccer dad down at Western Springs and in summer at Muriwai Beach with Nippers.

N. Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

My Head of Digital Marketing, Glen MacKellaig. He made me write that. Actually, it’s probably my mum.

N. What is your greatest fear?

I don’t have one but wouldn’t know what to do with myself if there was a world shortage on Thai green curry or rogan josh - or surfing spots.

N. What do you love most about your job?

The people and the great culture we have. I am very proud of how fast Harmoney has grown, and excited about growth in Australia. Employees at Harmoney are passionate about delivering superior customer experiences. Our employee engagement is 82%.
